Instagram new Privacy Policy: What data does it collect?
We developed a visual infographic outlining what kinds of data Instagram collects about you after examining the app’s Privacy Policy.
Instagram Privacy Policy issues: your DMs
In terms of Instagram privacy, the platform says that it does not collect or read your direct messages.
However, unlike WhatsApp, Instagram’s direct messages are not encrypted end-to-end. They are saved on the service’s servers. They are, of course, encoded, but Instagram might theoretically gain access to them.
The service does, however, gather metadata about your communications, such as who you text, when you text them, and how often you text them.
Everything you do on the platform is tracked
Simply by using Instagram, you can create a lot of useful information.
Consider how many individuals you communicate with, how many accounts you follow, how many posts you like, and how many articles you view. The app compiles a digital profile with your true interests, likes, and dislikes depending on all of your interactions.
In-app camera data
Do you enjoy using Instagram filters? What about some lovely masks? We love them as well, but there’s a snag.
Everything you film with the in-app camera is uploaded to Instagram’s servers. According to the app, its systems automatically process this data to provide you with suggestions for new masks and filters.
Your location — always collected
Instagram is quite interested to know where you are. The app gathers data on your present location, where you live, your preferred places to visit, and the companies and individuals you’re close to.
Even if you disable GPS, the app will still track your location based on your IP address, which reveals your general location.
Device & network data
Instagram really wants to know a lot about your phone.
Its hardware model, operating system, phone number, app version, battery level, available space, browser type, device IDs, Bluetooth signals, language, and time zone are all collected by the app.
Instagram also collects your mobile operator’s name, IP address, connection speed, signal strength, and data about nearby Wi-Fi hotspots.
Data from partners
Even when you’re not using Instagram, it collects information about you.
The Meta pixel, a track found on 40% of the top 10,000 websites on the internet, allows the app to track what you do on other websites.

Instagram shares it with Meta companies
According to the new Instagram Privacy Policy, all Meta products exchange collected data with one another. It doesn’t say how they do it or to what extent they do it.
Facebook may suggest groups and profiles based on your Instagram activity as an example of this type of sharing.

Instagram keeps track of just about everything you do and then lets advertisers target you based on what it knows about you.
Instagram may give your data to 3rd parties

Users of their analytics services, vendors and service providers, researchers, academics, and law enforcement are all included.
