With a few minor technology issues, the Volkswagen ID.4 is wonderful despite not being particularly fancy. Therefore, VW didn’t need to make many changes to the ID.4 to make it better with the new premium S trim for 2023. Only a little fancier than before, but it’s still the same EV.
A slick set of 20-inch wheels with a two-tone black-and-silver finish is the major outward update. The ID.4 S has a larger footprint thanks to these upgraded shoes than the original model’s 19-inch wheels. Full wraparound running lights that seem more upscale are added to the LED projector headlights, and even the front and rear VW badges are lighted.
The best changes are inside, though. In addition to delivering lumbar support with a light rubbing function and a memory feature that makes it simple to retain your ideal seating position, the faux leather seats are now power adjustable in 12 different ways. Even the wheel of a car is heated, by the way.
A cool panorama fixed glass roof with an electronic sunshade stretches back to the second row of seats. The rear tailboard now opens and shuts simply kicking your foot under the back bumper, and second-row passengers even get a new center console with cupholders and a cargo pass-through section.
All that’s left to say is that, yes, the ID.4 S feels a notch more luxurious than the ID.4 standard.
The regular ID.4’s chairs were already sturdy, so the addition of the heating and lumbar massage functions gives them further points. The panoramic sunroof provides rear passengers with a view of the sky, the heated steering wheel is always lovely in cold weather, and the quick open/close tailboard is invaluable when you have your hands full of shopping.
The base 62.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack for the ID.4 S continues to provide 201 horsepower and an acceptable 209 miles of range. You can acquire an 82.0-kilowatt-hour battery pack with 255 miles of range by upgrading to one of the Pro variants.
