As for Artificial Intelligence (AI), it remains to be an issue of concern in gaming industry debates. While some developers face criticism for AI usage, such as Call of Duty: While Black Ops 6 takes advantage of AI art generation for its logo, others are working around improving or adding creativity to video games. One such example is PUBG: Battlegrounds, which has recently been published by Krafton and is working on an innovative AI buddy for players.
UK’s PUBG AI-Powered CPC Companion
More specifically, at CES 2025, Krafton revealed that they are cooperating with Nvidia in creating a significant new character addition known as the Co-Playable Characters (CPCs) that reinvent players’ relations with most teammates.
Depicted as an enhancement of contemporary non-playable characters (NPCs), CPCs employ the SLM (small language model), which makes these characters grasp the game circumstances, address the player, and give back a similar reaction as a human.
Key Features of Ally:
Conversational Abilities: As with any teammate, players can use their voices to speak to Ally.
- Real-Time Strategy: Ally assists in planning actions within the game and provides tips, precautions, or answers regarding new situations.
- Enhanced Gameplay Experience: Ally, for instance, makes it easier for solo players to have fun and engaging cooperative gameplay.
- Krafton adds: “The CPC is an AI-controlled teammate whom players can communicate and coordinate with as they would within a regular team, thereby improving play.”
CPC Technology Going Beyond PUBG
Krafton has also quashed the rumor that CPC technology is being implemented in other games in its portfolio, such as the simulation game featured in inZOI. In this game, CPCs will take on roles as citizens who:
- Follow fashion trends.
- Spread rumors.
- Develop reputations.
- And more, making an AI-based, active, in-game environment.
There is no Release Date Yet, but the Future of AI in Gaming Is Here
Studio Still Untitled, but the Experience of Artificial Intelligence in Gaming is Already in the Process
While Krafton hasn’t provided a specific release date for CPCs, its implementation of this technology in PUBG: Battlegrounds and other titles puts the company at the vanguard of the development of AI in gaming.
This aggressive decision may advance the gaming sector’s investment in AI to the next level and demonstrate to players how they might benefit from it.
Krafton’s use of AI in PUBG: Battlegrounds could change the meaning of non-human teammates and turn solo gaming into something more fascinating.
