Are you aware that the upcoming gaming console might also be your TV? The new software update for LG Smart TVs is adding native support for Xbox Cloud Gaming, eliminating the need for a console.
Xbox Game Streaming is on LG TVs
As of April 23, the cloud-based gaming app from Xbox has been officially introduced to certain LG Smart TV models. With that said, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can now play a vast number of games by directly streaming them to their TVs.
Without providing a list, Microsoft did reveal a few models of the LG TV that will be supported, which are as follows:
- The 2025 LG TVs will feature the Xbox app, pre-installed via the new LG Gaming Portal, which is accessible through the Gaming Q-Card located on the TV’s home screen.
- New LG OLED models from 2022, Smart TVs from 2023, and all models running webOS 24 or later will receive the feature after a firmware update.
- Led by webOS 24 and the StanbyME screen, Smart monitors will be next in line to receive the feature.
The first step towards downloading the Xbox app is to check and update the TV’s firmware to version 23.20.01 or higher.
Use Your Own Controller
Although it is your TV that handles the game streaming part, the controller still remains a necessary component of the setup for play. Microsoft has announced support for the use of:
- Xbox Wireless Controller
- Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
- Xbox Adaptive Controller
- PlayStation DualShock 4
- PlayStation DualSense
As such, you can use your PS4 or PS5 controller even if you have no Xbox, and you will still be able to join in the game.
Major Development, But Not the First One
Regarding the new LG TV, the TV maker is not the first to support the Xbox Cloud Gaming. The Samsung Smart TVs from 2020 onwards have supported this feature for some time, and some Amazon Fire TV devices are also compatible with the Xbox app. These include:
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st & 2nd Gen)
- Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen)
A game streaming dongle based on a single game brand was their original thought at Microsoft, although the company has not yet released it. So far, the only way to make a smart TV work like an Xbox is in one way.
How can Xbox games Be Played on LG TVs?
The initial steps are quite easy:
- From the Home Page or Gaming Q-Card, navigate to LG Gaming Portal.
- Download and then open the Xbox app.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials or create a new account.
- Connect the Bluetooth controller you have.
- Browse Game Pass, select a game, and start playing!
Remember, a stable Internet connection is a must. Besides, the Xbox Cloud Gaming service should be accessible in your region. In case of doubt, refer to the list of Xbox-supported countries.
